Questions: 1. The reason for the hindrance test? 2.How the presence of altruism will influence the debilitation test? 3.The fundamental strides to be followed in applying the hindrance test? 4.Prepare the diary entry(ies) for any weakness misfortune happening at 30 June 2015? Answers: 1. Debilitation test: Debilitation test is an estimation instrument to gauge the value and rightness of expressed sum in asset report. As indicated by impedance test the aggregate sum of asset report must be decreased or expanded, in the event that the test is demonstrating a lower or higher worth individually. This test could be applied for charge records and business accounts. Longreach ltd has additionally considered to embrace an impedance test (Guthrie Pang, 2013). This progression is taken by Longreach ltd to comprehend and deal with the value of its benefits appropriately. Longreach bunch constrained is a private association that is occupied with speculation administrations. Motivation behind Impairment charge: The principle reason for AASB 136 is to guarantee that the associations resources have conveyed at its recoverable sum in the budget summaries. An impedance resource is that advantage whose worth isn't recoverable either by utilizing it or selling it. For example, a substance The reason for testing the hindrance of advantages is that an associations resources conveying sum probably won't influence the recoverable sum in light of the fact that: The sum expressed at fiscal summaries of a benefit is the aftereffect of decisions and appraisals made by the bookkeeper. Devaluation on the benefit just delineates the portion of advantages cost. It doesnt think about the recoverability of the advantages (Finch, 2006). 2. Effect of presence of Goodwill on disability test: Hindrance of altruism is connected with the charge that the recorded estimation of generosity on the monetary reports surpasses the genuine worth. The organization is recommended to run and keep up the disability test on generosity on regular routine. Altruism is the advantage whose worth could be change whenever because of numerous conditions and circumstances with the goal that organization has informed to screen the worth regarding its generosity on customary premise. However, in the event of getting another business or organization than it prompts a consequence of drop down money producing units. So for this situation, Longreach ltd must diminish the estimation of altruism which has just been paid at the hour of target organization procurement. Generosity testing for Impairment: Generosity testing is connected with money creating units portion. In the event of money producing units has just been get the measure of altruism and Longreach ltd run an activity for partner the estimation of that money creating unit than conveying sum ought to likewise be remembered for that activity while choosing the benefit or misfortune. Altruism of a business straightforwardly influences the money producing units disability test as indicated by the distribution of generosity. Regularly, the altruism is dispensed to just those money creating units which are relied upon to get benefits by the collaboration of 2 distinct units. In this circumstance, if the recoverable estimation of benefit is more than the conveying estimation of advantage than it viewed as non weakened unit though if the circumstance is only inverse, than the unit is viewed as debilitation misfortune. Further, an individual test has likewise done to decide the genuine worth of the benefits of the organization. At Longreach ltd, the consequence of altruisms weakness test relies on the recoverable measure of value worth or associations esteem. The calculation of recoverable sum has done by the element esteem than the came about information of disability test must be contrasted and the contributed capital. Rather than it, the recoverable estimation of value would be laid upon the investors value. In the wake of doing an investigation and examining the realities, it has been figured that if there should arise an occurrence of recoverable sum laid upon element esteem is lesser than the sum which have been contributed by Longreach ltd would give an outcome in decrease of altruism sum. However, the conveying sum could never be diminished from the genuine worth. 3. Steps for applying the weakness test: A debilitation test is constantly worried about the figuring of conveyed worth, recognizable proof of CGU, recoverable sum and a lot more in indicated time. An appropriate system has been depicted in the IAS 136. Longreach ltd must need to recognize and decide the reasonable worth, recoverable worth and conveyed estimation of all the given resources in the money related archives for distinguishing that whether resource is disabled or not. On the off chance that the all out recoverable estimation of the money creating units would be lesser than the conveyed esteem then resources weakness would occur. For a compelling trial of disability on resources, Longreach bunch ltd would run a recoverable test to recognize the reasonable estimations of advantages. This test makes a correlation of all the undisclosed money inflows which would happen in future with the conveying sum. In the event of conveying sum esteem gets more noteworthy than the registered worth, than resources would be considered as not recoverable (Carlin, Finch Ford, 2007). Following advances must be trailed by the Longreach ltd to apply the debilitation test: Distinguish the recoverable measure of benefits Decide the present and future incomes of the business while obtaining the generosity. Check all the applications identified with bookkeeping gauges as per AASB 136 for running the hindrance test. Decide the distinction estimation of conveyed sum and recoverable sum. Make a move as needs be. This means depicts that how an organization can reach on an ideal outcome with respect to impedance the advantage or not without any problem. This test shows an outcome which help an association in taking the choice in regards to either debilitate the advantage or not. End: In this report, the contextual investigation of Longreach bunch ltd has been mulled over. This report helped in understanding the estimation of hindrance test in an association. It has been learnt through this examination that how impedance test shows genuine worth of an advantage. Further, it has additionally been seen that this test is significant for an association to decide the estimation of all the substantial and elusive resources. One might say that hindrance test ought to consistently be attempt after an away from of AASB 136. PART B: 4. Calculation of Impairment misfortune for Crosbow Ltd A. US government Contracting Protest Procedure (Answering Specific Questios as Briefly as Possible) - 550 Words

US government Contracting Protest Procedure (Answering Specific Questios as Briefly as Possible) (Essay Sample) Content: Protest System Studentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Name Institution Introduction The US government provides regulatory guidance that defines the legal scope, confines and general framework of government contracting. An integral aspect of the contacting regulation is the protest mechanism, which provides avenues for protest and disputes with government on government contracts. This paper seeks to delve into a critical analysis of the protest system and procedure to determine its effectiveness in resolving issues as well as to review the impact of the system on general government operations Review of the protest system and procedure While it is generally argued that it does not make commercial sense for venders to be able to sue their prospective clients, it becomes necessary for many fundamental reasons. The legal provision allows for checks and balances as well as overall oversight. Vendors being able to sue provide the necessary focus and systemic legal provisions to counter fraud, wastage, abuse and other ethical consideration in government contracting. It enables prompt review, determination and ruling on contracting disputes as well as provision of framework for the resolutions. In this way, if a contractor has grounds for disagreement on a government decision with regards to government contracting, such a contractor enjoys the protest system, providing a platform for complaint and redress. Law and order is the foundation of any functioning government. The government can therefore not be able to operate effectively and legally without a strict legal framework. A proper legal framework must involve the ability and provision for resolution of issues and complaints. While delays in provision of services and governance abound when the complaint procedure is invoked, the essence of a conflict resolution and issues resolution mechanism cannot be understated. The current framework is fairly considerate of the need for government role to govern and provide services. The framework allows for continuation of delivery of commodities and services in instances where they are urgently needed and a delay cannot be afforded (Symon, 2009). Besides, it allows incumbent contractors to resume provision of services during the litigation process. It would be recommendable; however, that plans be instituted to ensure that there is adequate time between the invitation to tender and the actual awarding of contracts to allow time for protests and determination to ease the burden on service delivery and governance. The protest process only allows for interested parties to file for determination. Except under special circumstances, there are strict timelines on submission of protests. With respect to award of contracts, prospective contractors who would potentially be in line for consideration if they are able to sustain the protest are admissible as protest. Other bases for protest include defective solicitation, issues with regards to acceptance and rejection of bids, unlawful termination of a contract among others. In addition, in instances where a tender involving routine service contracts are terminated, incumbent contractors continue to provide goods and services for the up to three month litigation period until the contract is awarded. While it allows for the incumbent contractor to continue providing services and items, it is necessitated by need for continuity so as not to curtail government operations. Incumbent contractors for provision of routine service contracts provide a firewall against operational shutdown by government. The protest system as currently constituted provides clarity and makes flimsy claims easily dismissed outrightly or non- admissible without denying complainants a chance to be heard. The protest process in government contracting might be expensive in terms of time resources as well as the expense and personnel of running the system. Provisions should be put in place to ensure that such unforeseen incidences do not stifle government efficiency in governance by improving the time frames for litigation. It must however be understood that any resources incurred are for the pursuit of justice and fairness and does not count as wastage as justice is the foundation of functional society. Furthermore, there is risk that the whole system portends an inherent risk of creating a ...

Richard Nixon s Foreign Policy - 2211 Words

As much as the United States might like to dismiss it, other nations do exist. Since our founding as a nation, we have struggled with foreign policy initiatives. George Washington, our first president, decided that isolationism would protect America. And while Americans followed Washington’s philosophy for decades, foreign policy still leaked through the cracks. The Monroe doctrine radically shifted America isolationism from complete dissociation to selective dissociation. Overall, America’s foreign goals have shifted further outward as the years went on. Although many presidents boast adroit foreign policies, Richard Nixon’s foreign policy deserves a larger spotlight. Although he mired his career in a lackluster domestic policy and the†¦show more content†¦Luckily for Nixon, he realized that the two strongest communist nations, The Soviet Union and China, faced a split. Their relations began to fragment, and Nixon felt if he could capitalize on this spl intering, then he could guide the world into a more peaceful era and push the United States above its rivals. Moreover, he felt a USSR lacking a Chinese ally would be far easier to negotiate with for strategic treaties. Once China and the USSR splintered, and strategic talks had been held with both the USSR and China, then North Vietnam would lack committed allies, as Nixon would have diplomatically tied both the USSR and China to the United States. Ending the Vietnam War and uniting the United States with its eastern enemies on common diplomatic middle ground would prove no easy feat, but Nixon felt that it would help better the world scene. To achieve this diplomatic strength, Richard Nixon first turned toward China. For decades, China had posed unique opportunities to America. However, these opportunities shriveled when in 1949, Mao Zedong established the People’s Republic of China, a communist republic aligned more with the USSR than with the United States. Given Americaà ¢â‚¬â„¢s animosity towards the Soviet Union, this animosity extended itself to the People’s Republic of China and to Mao Zedong. Just over twenty years later, though, even though Mao still held considerable power, the USSR and China began to drift apart. Why did the USSR and China drift apart? Mao, for one,

AIS Transactions on Human Computer Interaction †MyAssignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about the AIS Transactions on Human Computer Interaction. Answer: Introduction Business communication is indisputably one of the most critical subjects to explore. Even though it has been ignored by most researchers and scholars, it should be appreciated that this subject is one of the factors that keep any business in positive progress. Businesses that use good communication systems are likely to succeed as opposed to those that do not or use poor strategies(Leonardi, 2014). On the same note, the use of social media in the place of work has brought a lot of impact ranging to the way things are done therein to the success of the business itself. This fact means that business to a large extent is dependent on communication. This paper presents a report of research that was previously done concerning the impact of the use of social media in the workplace. For the research, Canva organization was chosen as the case study. The effects of active internal communication and the use of virtual employee interaction were selected as the subject matter. In the case of social media and virtue interaction, the internet process of Bitrix was selected. This report will identify the company and give its brief background, explore the impact of social networking on job performance, look at the future of digital workforce and workplace, unveil the effects of social media in the workplace and lastly report on the media theory, concept and knowledge transfer process. The organization background Canva is a company that is involved in free graphic design that was established in the year 2012 in Australia serving as the most extensive yearbook company in the whole of Australia. The company has been associated with a rapid market involvement based on the fact that it got 75,000 users in the first business year(Meraz, 2014). In 2016-2017 calendar year, its revenue increased from $AU 7.8 to $AU 23.5 million, a good indication of positive progress. Because the company specializes in the professional picture and banner printing, it becomes, therefore, imperative to have mutual communication and interaction with the employees, a step that promotes invention and innovativeness. Canva has some loopholes that ought to be closed for maximum performance. Sometimes it registers failed communication due to the use of inappropriate methods of communication. Employees need to communicate to and with each other at any time of the day forming a virtual online group. It is due to this reason therefore, than the company ought to embrace more sophisticated digital communication to ease connectivity between its employees thus improving performance. Evidently, the use of social media networking and constant communication and sharing of ideas and other information within the employees in Canva has brought about some felt effects(Leftheriotis, 2015). From the previously conducted research on the same, it has been found that employee performance is entirely dependent on the use of intranet and interaction as this has brought about motivation in the company(Hudson, 2015). The two outstanding variables, in this case, are the employees and the management. This research found out that transfer of implicit knowledge has at the end of the day brought about explicit knowledge. Interaction has also brought about ethics acquisition and adherence. The so acquired understanding will affect the job performance as well as the problem-solving skills. The future of digital workforce is appealing and promising. Most of the companies worldwide, of which Canva is part of, are continually acquiring the idea of digital connection amongst all the company stakeholders for the betterment of its operations(Kim, 2017). Just as the social media is threatening to overtake the mainstream media in the dissemination of information and new ideas, it is also threatening traditional ways of communication and interaction in the modern day organizations(Romero, 2016). As a result, therefore, it is expected that tomorrow management and all aspects of the organization will be controlled digitally and that the old practices will be dropped. For instance, an employee will not be obliged to signing a hard document to prove his/her attendance. Instead, the employee will need to log into the system, and it recognizes him/her(Kim Y. , 2015). Again on the same note, employees will be in a position to work online at their convenience and in the comfort of thei r homes. Impact of the social media in the workplace According to the previously conducted research concerning Canva organization, it has been found out that the use of social media has various effects in the workplace. Firstly, it has brought about teamwork and social cohesion within the employees(Ngai, 2017). It is true that when we come together great things happen. The indisputable fact remains that one mind cannot beat ten minds. It is through social media that employees have come together and started working together as a team(Archer-Brown, 2014). Currently, the success of Canva organization is attached to teamwork and cohesion brought about by the use of virtual connectivity. Another outstanding effect of the use of virtual connectivity in Canva is improved performance. Due to a virtual system of connection, employees have actively generated valuable ideas that have boosted that performance of the company(Faraj, 2015). Inventions and innovations have also been witnessed as a result of the use of social media in Canva. Increased rate of production is yet another noticeable impact that has been brought about by the use of social media in canva(Moqbel, 2015). Employees have developed a sense of belonging to the company and have a feeling that the company belongs to them and therefore they must give the best. This fact has resulted in increased output hence increased revenue. While social media has proven to be very crucial in improving the togetherness and productivity of an organization, it should be appreciated that it has varying negative effects. Firstly, it forms a basis for the development of workplace romance, something that reduces performance. Secondly, employees may use it for unprofessional social interaction thereby reducing performance. Thirdly, some employees take its advantage in building their social profile rather than working for the best interest of the company. The solution to all the problems mentioned above is good policy prescription. The organization should have well defined policies stipulating the dos and donts when using social media and virtual connectivity in the workplace. The media theory, knowledge and transfer process The knowledge transfer process is entirely dependent on communication and in this case communication over the internet. According to the research conducted to give this report, it has been found that the laying out of strategies that bring about the betterment of the company depends on the communication process. This statement is to mean that if a communication process is weak than the business performance is poor(Heinrichs, 2016). On the same note, companies with useful information dissemination and knowledge transfer processes stand a more significant chance to succeed as opposed to those that use poor knowledge transfer strategies(Schermerhorn, 2015). In order make sense out of this fact, the implementation of any business ideas and plans will be put into reality through effective communication and this case social media interaction. Training employees on critical issues will also be made more accessible by virtual interaction Conclusion Human beings from all walks of the world feel good when they interact and share ideas and feelings about any subject. This interaction acts as a motivating factor that prevents boredom and improves performance. If this aspect is incorporated in the modern day businesses, then they would automatically succeed. The use of social media and virtual connectivity has placed many companies and corporations in a better place than they were before implementation of the connectivity. Employee job performance and activity in the workplace has been improved thereby increasing per unit production. Therefore, the use of social media and virtual connectivity has positively impacted performance and output. Recommendations Social media and virtual connectivity in the workplace have brought about the success of many companies. As a business communication scholar, I would, therefore, feel obliged to recommend the use of social media and virtual connectivity to all companies willing to have positive results. Undoubtedly, virttual connectivity amongst the employees will bring about increased performance, and this is the ultimate goal of any company. Just as Canva organization has succeeded as a result of Bitrix intranet, so with other organizations that implement this approach succeed. References Archer-Brown, C. (2014). Investigating cratering on the moon Essay Example

Investigating cratering on the moon Essay Example Investigating cratering on the moon Essay Investigating cratering on the moon Essay I am planning to investigate factors that affect the diameter and depth of a crater formed when a meteorite strikes the moons surface. The moon is covered with a powdered crust. When meteorites strike the surface we obtain impact craters. To simulate this without actually going to the moon I shall drop a ball bearing into a tray of dry sand. Variables Variables that might affect the outcome of this experiment: * Height (The higher up, the more speed the bearing will pick up) * Size of bearing (This will determine how much sand will collide with the bearing as it falls) * Mass of Bearing (The heavier, the faster and with more force the ball will fall) * Depth of the sand (If too shallow some craters may not properly form as they might hit the base of the tray) * Velocity (this will depend on the mass and height) * Flat sand surface (Must be smooth and same depth for fair test) * Type of sand (If too dense or big particles the bearing may not displace as much) * Angle of impact from the bearing (This would affect the width and depth of crater as the bearing would go in at an angle so the ball wont have to balance force with the compression of sand underneath) I will take 10 results (100mm through to 1000mm) and then do them again in total of 3 times and then take the average of the 3 tests to give a wide and reliable range. I am going to change the height from bearing and the surface of the sand. I will try and keep the other variables the same during the experiment (this is to keep it a fair test). I am going to use the same bearing so the size + mass will stay the same; I am going to drop the bearing from the same angle (horizontally) and will try to keep the surface of the sand as even as possible because if the bearing hit a small stone in the sand it would cause more friction and an upward force due to the larger surface area of the stone compared to a grain of sand. To make this a fair test I will: * Try to get the surface of the sand as smooth and same depth as posible * Use a clamp to keep accurate heights. * Use all of the same equipment each time I use it, including the same bearing so there will be no size or weight differences. Method * Tray (for the sand) * Ruler (1 meter) * Ball bearing (15mm diameter, 15.5g) * Clamp (1 meter tall), boss + clamp * Sand (fine sand) * Magnet * Vernier Calliper How to do the test * Fill a the tray about half full with sand. * Set up the apparatus like so: * Drop the bearing from the clamp at a height of 200 1000mm (in 100mm steps) * Use a magnet to lift the bearing out from the crater. * Record the dimensions of the crater with the Vernier Calliper. * Record the results * Fill the hole and smooth the surface ready for the next test. * Do the hole experiment two more times Prediction I predict that if the height (from which the bearing is dropped) is doubled, the depth of the crater will double. I chose the depth instead of width because the bearing can only go up to a certain width because the displacement will only work while the bearing is above the sand surface once below there will be no displacement above ground. This equation proves my prediction: Ep = Weight x height As the bearing is dropped, potential energy transfers into kinetic energy. When the bearing hits the surface of the sand, an upward force (work) causes it to slow down and stop. Work done = Force x Distance Stopping distance = work done force work done = energy transfer force = mass (10N) e.g. A bearing (0.5kg) and is held 5 meters above the surface of the sand. Its is: Mass x Gravity x Height = potential energy 0.5 x 10 x 5 = 25J So, before the bearing hits the sand it has 25J of kinetic energy. Braking Distance = Work done force = 5J/2.5N = 2 Results: Height from bottom of the ball to sand surface Diameter (mm) 1st 2nd 3rd Average 100 25 25 27 26 200 33 30 30 31 300 37 37 34 36 400 37 42 37 39 500 43 40 36 41 600 48 42 39 43 700 48 47 38 44 800 48 50 42 47 900 50 51 44 48 1000 54 50 46 50 Height Depth (mm) 1st 2nd 3rd Average 100 3 5 6 5 200 4 7 5 5 300 6 10 7 8 400 8 10 8 9 500 8 12 10 10 600 9 13 11 11 700 10 14 12 12 800 10 14 12 12 900 12 15 13 13 1000 13 15 14 14 Analysis My results did not provide evidence towards my prediction. So my prediction was not accurate. The Depth of the crater is not doubled if the height is doubled. The line of best fit shows 2mm of depth vs. 200 height. So the graph shows roughly that the depth is a 1:100 ratio against the height. The results on both graphs show a rise in a steady trend. My prediction could be wrong because I didnt take into account that friction caused by the sand will affect the end result. The displacement of the sand as the ball strikes the surface would also have an effect on the stopping distance, because kinetic energy will transfer into heat and sound energy easier. When the bearing is lifted higher above the sand surface, it potential is raised and more kinetic energy will be released when it strikes the surface. The higher the bearing hits the sand from, more sand is displaced and the ball bearings kinetic energy transfer to heat and sound, so the crater becomes wider because as the ball displaces more sand. All of my results follow an upward trend, which I expected. I also expected that the results would level off at some point, because as the ball reaches terminal velocity, it gained maximum kinetic energy and the crater cannot get any bigger in diameter or depth as the kinetic energy does not change and will not me falling without anymore force when past Terminal velocity. At this point, the line will level and becomes horizontal. This was not shown on my results but this does not mean it wouldnt happen it may have happened much later at higher drop points, but I couldnt drop the ball from much higher than I have already done. Evaluation If I was going to do this test again I would: 1. Do the experiment over at least 5 times. 2. Drop the ball from higher points (if possible) 3. Use finer sand which would make the test fairer because the bearing will not deflect off any stones or larger particles in the sand. 4. Somehow take the measurements better and more accurate, a vernier calliper is the best thing I could think of which is accurate but is easily wrong by a few millimetres. 5. Take my experiment further by using a table tennis ball with a small hole in the side to change the mass of the ball without changing the shape or air resistance of the ball. 6. Look at different velocity and see how that might affect the outcome. This could be achieved by either launching the ball from a catapult of some sort or dropping the ball from a much higher point. 7. Try different type of sands (or soil, fine gravel, etc) maybe a fine sand would have a different result than coarse sand. Because maybe the cosmic dust covering the moon isnt of the same texture. The experiment was a success in one way, that I learnt by my mistakes. But my results did not match up with my prediction so in that sense it was a failure. I dont think I took enough results, more results could have been taken to make a wider and more reliable range but that would of need more time.

Planning Personal Finance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Planning Personal Finance - Essay Example anced understanding with respect to the manner through which personal financial decision-making is affected as well as the tactics and tools that can and should be integrated with at each and every stage of the financial planning cycle of the individual investor (Irving, 2012). Of all of the understandings that will be represented within this brief analysis, perhaps the most important is with respect to understanding the fact that the most relevant financial products that should be considered at every stage of life are neither uniform nor static. What is meant by this is that the changes in the overall financial outlook of the individual investor, the changes in career, the changes in wealth, the changes in savings, the focus upon different aspects of resources, and the manner through which all of these focuses evolve throughout the lifetime of the individual investor. The first and most obvious stage of the typical financial lifecycle of an individual is with regards to early childhood. Within this particular stage, few if any resources exist for the individual to promote their own financial independence and the future. However, within this particular stage, the individual is presented with an understanding of the value of money and needs to which it can be earned, state, and instruments such as interest can be engaged as a means of maximizing the overall amount of money that the individual has. Rather than merely glossing over this particular stage of financial lifecycle development, it is extraordinarily important that stakeholders within society seeks to engender a level of understanding within young people of this demographic that money has been innate and tacit value that must be understood and appreciated. Moreover, by choosing to make wise financial decisions, the value and overall utility that the money can bring to the individual is also a tool that can be understood and utilized within this particular period of life (O’Neill, 2011). Whereas many

Write an essay about the movie stand and deliver

Write an about the movie stand and deliver - Essay Example Escalante knew of the Garfield High School as one of the most East Los Angele’s notorious barrios from the onset. He knew it was a place whereby poor, hardened street kid were never supposed to master mathematics, algebra, trigonometry and calculus based on their cultural legacies. However, the prior knowledge shaped Escalante mode of teaching. Accordingly, he believed that a teacher should at no point, let his students give up. He therefore, decided to love the subject and children he taught to make the kids see that they have an opportunity to become whatever they wish to be in the future. Therefore, Escalante inspired, cajoled and taunted young kids who were troubled to see themselves as they could be and never as they were. Subsequently, for Escalante to accomplish this, embraced a teaching strategy based on the ganas that meant drive or desire in Spanish terms. Therefore, ganas became his battle cry, as he always chided apathetic administrators’ as well jaded teach ers alongside being a powerful word for motivating his students. We see how other teachers thought Escalante (played by Edward James Olmos) was joking when he ultimately declared his interest in teaching calculus. The knowledge of the kids cultural legacies made him adopt such a teaching strategy in which his children ate, slept and lived mathematics. He made it a rule that the children were to arrive an hour before school and stayed two, three hours after school. He drilled his students on Saturdays as well as made summer school mandatory. This was hated by some parents who were harboring cultural legacies who even went further to let Escalante know the dissents. He became successful and by 1991, 600 Garfield students were taking Advanced Placement exams. This was not only in mathematics but also in other subjects, something unheard of at the time. Escalante had a

Civil Rights in the 1960s Essay Example for Free

Civil Rights in the 1960s Essay Have you ever sat down and wondered to yourself, what it would be like if schools, restrooms, restaurants, and even public transportation were still segregated today? The majority of people who were born after the 1970’s take for granted how lucky we are as a country and nation to have overcome slavery and the steps against racism we have battled are way through. Slavery was ended when Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and was later ratified in December of 1865. Though this law ordered the end to slavery it did very little if nothing to stop the racism that was given towards blacks or any other minority. Until the late 1950’s not many presidents or Congressman had tried to legislate civil rights laws. The Civil Rights struggle that heated up to its climax in the 1960’s was neither a simple nor wanted task by any means. Many Presidents tried taking on the civil rights movement starting with Harry S. Truman. Truman was not for racial equality among blacks and often said so, but he wanted fairness and equality before the law (Patterson 378-382). Once Truman got the ball rolling for the first time since Abraham Lincoln, Truman pushed for a Civil Rights bill and the movement quickly started to escalate and it became one of the main issues of American politics. The next man to take office was John F Kennedy; Kennedy acted as though he had plans to address civil rights issues and is known for saying â€Å"Ask not what your country can do for you†¦ask what you can do for your country† in his inaugural address( ). Kennedy’s plans were never met in his short time as president due to assignation in 1963. Kennedy dying meant Lyndon Johnson was the next president to take president and her went on to make the next big civil rights legislation when the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was established. It took the support of millions and the lives of thousands for our country to realize that people should not be segregated because of their ethnicity or color of their skin. One of the first and largest groups of civil rights movement supporters was young people and in particular college students. A college student in 1963 saw a very different daily landscape than a current college student sees today. Today kids grow up side by side with minority kids throughout their daily lives; back then they might have been the lucky few and grown up looking at blacks as equals, but more than likely they viewed them as inferiors, or even just plain animals. Then these young racists knew know better and went away to College and found themselves in one of the first places you could find support of the civil rights movement. There are many reasons to why the ball picked up speed so fast at universities. The first reason being the young people of the 60’s had not lived alongside slaves or indentured servants nor did they see the great depression or WW2 as had many of their parents and politicians of the times, so they had a different view on racism. The young people of the 60’s were viewed by the older generations specially those of the south, as being soft for not having to deal with the hardships they had to such as the great depression and the World Wars ( ). Instead of going to work before graduating high school like people in the1920’s and 1930’s people were graduating high school and even getting jobs. This caused for a more educated and affluent generation which usually runs along with having certain moral standings such as treating people of a different race equally to people of your own. With a generation bigger than ever before and more people going to college than ever before it caused for a huge explosion of self-freedom. There was many different ways students would show there want of freedom (Patterson 407-408). A very common practice in the 1960’s was for blacks and fellow college students to have sit-in’s at all white diners or transportation places. These sit-ins consisted of a group or single African American going in and taking a seat where only whites are allowed to sit and refuse to leave. Hundreds of sit-ins occurred around the nation and many taking place on university campuses run by students themselves. Several of these sit-ins are famed for the effectiveness they afterwards achieved and others for the violence that was caused upon the protestors (Patterson 382-386).The most famous case is the story of Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks was on a public bus in the racist Montgomery, Alabama when the bus driver asked her to give her colored seat to a white man, because the white section was full. Rosa refused to get out of her seat and it resulted in her getting arrested. Rosa was not the first African American to refuse leaving her seat for a white person but she was viewed by th e NAACP as the best case to fight in court.( ) In the famous words of Jesse Jackson, â€Å"In many ways, history is marked as before and after Rosa Parks. She sat down in order that we all might stand up, and the walls of segregation began to come down( ).The support of white students to follow fellow African American students to sit-ins was not always there. Local and national news stations started to air live footage of what was happening on the streets to protestors of segregation. The emotion put on a young college student when they see one of their peers that attend college to get an education just like them gets blasted with a fire hose from ten feet away or gets viciously attacked by police dogs. This picture caused thousands of other students to want to fight for change as well. Along with the new access to live feed news there were people such as Martin Luther King Jr. who were doing all they could to paint the realistic picture of the life of an American black man during segregation. Luther got his point across in multiple ways including his famous memoir, â€Å"Why We Can’t Wait†, in this memoir he explains how horrible the everyday life of an African American in America can be and how politicians for years have just looked over the horrific treatment of blacks and that it has been too long and the time is now(King Jr 11-13). Besides the sit-ins occurring across the nation African Americans and whites were also organizing marches to protest segregation as well. Along with the marches inspiring speeches such as Martin Luther King’s famous â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech were given. King’s 17 minute speech that was given in front of over 250,000 Americans on the steps of Lincoln Memorial, is one of the most well-known and moving speeches in American history(Patterson385-386). A large number of the people in the crowd were college students, due to the appeal Martin Luther King drew from young people. He gained this appeal by talking of equality of races and the chance for any man or woman to become whatever they pleased and not be held back due to race, religion or any other difference a person may have. While students saw the abuse blacks were taking simply for the color of their skin they started to join together on marches and attending civil rights rallies. The more the King, Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, and many others protested and spread the word of unfair treatment the more support of younger generation people began to support the civil rights movement. Another reason for the large involvement of college students within the civil rights movement of the 1960’s was due to the dramatically growing amount of student organized groups that were fighting for true democracy and equality to all. One of these organizations was the Students for Democratic Society (SDS). SDS was founded in 1960 but had roots dating to the early 1900’s; the goal of SDS was to mainly protest and voice the message that equality to all and peaceful means makes a successful country ( ). SDS was not the only organization that was taking big steps to get the civil rights movement moving, there were hundreds if not thousands of organizations that were meeting about and protesting the civil rights movement. These groups were known for telling young people what they wanted to hear and some even became militant groups. Membership in these organizations grew drastically once Lyndon Johnson started sending more and more troops into Vietnam. The Vietnam War itself had little impact on the civil rights movement of the United States, but it did however portray the world image that America was not going to let communistic governments take control of countries and deny their own people of civil rights. Many Americans did not agree with the war and saw it was neither the time nor the place to go and fight a war on foreign soil when the devastating effects of WW2 were still in the back of people’s minds. The largest critic of the war was overwhelming young people, they saw themselves as the ones being sent to die for a reason that was not worthy of American lives. Though segregation and a war in Asia seem to have little in common on the surface, during the reform of the 1960’s they found each other going hand in hand. Many African Americans of the United States believed that if we were fighting in a foreign country to reserve their people’s civil rights, then they would soon get their civil rights protected as well. They were mistaken and by this and the huge support of the anti-war movement and the animosity growing against the current segregation laws molded into one giant movement. This movement being carried by young people, who saw the possibility of change, carried throughout the nation and became the biggest civil rights movement in American history since abolishing slavery (Patterson 413-422). Now that we have an idea of what growing up with segregation looks like and how it can split a nation in two, I think I can say that joining the activist movement when it began in the 1960’s was almost a no brainer to many young people of that generation. They had a tremendous amount of pressure from their fellow black peers to be viewed as equals, they had an unwanted war fueling a large part of the country, and they were also a generation that believed in change and ending the horrible acts that were committed under segregation. With all the pressures from outside sources and the generation as a whole going through a freedom crisis, college students came together and became the perfect torch barrier’s for the civil rights movement.

The Black Death Essay -- essays research papers

A plague is a bacterial infection that can take on more than one form. One of the greatest plagues that have stricken mankind throughout history was the Black Death. The Black Death was the outbreak of the bubonic plague that struck Europe and the Mediterranean area between 1347 and 1351. This plague was the most severe plague that hit the earth because of its origin (the spread), the symptoms, and the effects of the plague.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Scientists and historians are still unsure about the origins of the bubonic plague. Medieval European writers believed that it began in China, which they considered to be a land of almost magical happenings. Chroniclers wrote that it began with earthquakes, fire falling from the sky, and plagues of vermin. Like medieval travel literature, these accounts are based on a number of myths about life in areas outside of Europe. It now seems most probable that infected rodents migrated from the Middle East into southern Russia, the region between the Black and Caspian seas. The plague was then spread west along trade routes. Plague moved quickly along the major trade routes. From Pisa, where it had arrived early in 1348, it traveled to Florence and then on to Rome and Bologna; from Venice it moved into southern Germany and Austria; and from Genoa it crossed the Tyrrhenian Sea to Barcelona in Spain and Marseilles in France. It continued through the towns of southern Franc e, reaching Paris. From there the contagion spread to England and the Low Countries. Parts of Europe were initially spared the epidemic. Milan was almost unique among the major Italian towns. The lord of the city closed the gates to travelers coming from plague areas, and few people died. Many parts of Germany and Eastern Europe also escaped the epidemic in 1348 through 1351. Probably because of their relative isolation, Bohemia, Poland, and central Germany experienced no plague before the 1360s and 1370s. The people from these vast countries did not know this was carried by vermin, so they were scared of what they could do and could not have done to acquire the plague. This made the disease spread easily.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In bubonic plague, the first symptoms are headache, nausea, vomiting, aching joints, and a general feeling of ill health. The lymph nodes of the groin or, less commonly, of the armpit or neck, suddenly become painf... ... destroyed people and not possessions, the drop in population was accompanied by a corresponding rise in per capita wealth. Large increases in spending in the towns at this time are well documented. Profits, however, for landlords and merchants declined as they found themselves having to pay higher wages and getting less when they sold their products. Governments were forced to adjust to the social disruption caused by plague. First local governments, and then in the case of England, the monarchy, attempted to regulate the movement and price of foodstuffs as well as wages paid to laborers. The English Statute of Laborers of 1351 tried to hold wages at preplague levels. Similar statutes were passed in various parts of France, Germany, and Italy. Landlords tried to collect higher fees from tenant farmers as a way to increase declining incomes. Unrest among the peasants was one of the major causes of the English Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The English rebels objected to high payments to landowners and legal limitations on the rights of some peasants. Economic and political unrest occurred in most parts of Europe during the second half of the 14th century.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚

Buddhism From The Indian System Of Life - 1644 Words

In the view of many, religion is entrenched and founded in what people believe. In the case of Buddhism, it is understood that it originated from the Indian systems of life. In the process of their trading activities, the Arab traders made it possible for the religion to spread to the other nations such as Japan and China. It is also important to note that the Buddhist faith originated from Buddha. In essence, the adherents of this faith confirm that the life subsisted and experiences borne by Buddha serve as the guides to their present and future lives. For instance, notwithstanding Buddha’s skinny nature, it is understood that he managed to reach enlightenment upon fasting. He was the prince of a North Indian Tribe. It also suffices to†¦show more content†¦As for nirvana, it talks about the aspects which ought to be embraced so as to adequately contain pain. In this regard, it is notable to express that the right mindset, concentration, and decent livelihoods are th e key things to appreciate so as to bring pain and suffering to an end. On the same note, it is justifiable to denote that meditation was one of the foundations of Buddhism in China, India as well as Japan. In the contemporary society, Buddhists still observe some of the practices followed during the early days; for instance, they refrain from eating at certain hours or engaging in any kind of immoral activities. Specifically in China, Buddhism is believed to have originated from Daoism. In essence, the Daoists’ language was mostly utilized when it came to interpreting the Buddhist scriptures and other writings into Chinese. As seen from the above discussion, it is unequivocal to note that Buddhism, just like the other religions such as Hindu, Islam, and Christianity, has a rich history. The subsequent discussion focusses to identify and illustrate why Buddhism emerged as a significant religion in China as expressed in Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion† and Fundamentals of Buddhism by Daniel Santina and Sam Harris respectively. First, Santina’s publication expresses that the entrenchment of Buddhism in China was contributed by Emperor Wu’s
